चुनाव हारने के बाद नेताजी के चेहरे की मुस्कान स्थायी उदासी में बदल गई। कार्यकर्ता सांत्वनाकार बन चुके हैं, बासी बर्फी पर मक्खियाँ भिनभिना रही हैं, और भैंस का उदाहरण देते हुए आलाकमान ने नेताजी को समझाया — “राजनीति भी दुधारु भैंस है, एक दिन बाखरी होनी ही पड़ती है।”

जब देव सोते हैं तो देश की नींव भी ऊंघने लगती है। जनता, बाबू, साहब और चपरासी सब अपनी-अपनी तरह से नींद का महिमामंडन करते हैं। जागने की ज़िम्मेदारी बस सेना और कुछ अदृश्य प्रहरी निभाते हैं। इस नींद में सत्ता फलती है, और जनहित सो जाता है।
